One common thing I’ve always found interesting in Jekyll & Hyde adaptations is how they tend to purify Jekyll’s motivations. Strange case!Jekyll is shockingly honest that he only intended to separate good and evil so that neither would bother the other with their conflicting goals– he has no qualms about a being of pure evil waltzing around doing whatever it wants. Now, in the context of these adaptations, it often does make sense to sanitize him… maybe we’re applying the “tragic scientist that pushed science too far” narrative, or simply aiming to make him more sympathetic to the audience, especially if the story follows him instead of Utterson.

The same sort of thinking applies in-universe here… a crowd of upstanding, virtuous citizens couldn’t possibly agree with something as insane as rending apart the human soul and letting pure evil run free! Destroying evil is a much better pitch.

This past week, I ended up seeing the new Iron Lung movie– twice. Originally I was just gonna go once, but I had multiple friend groups seeing it, and I’m certainly happy to see it again! I really enjoyed the way the horror was played, and loved the cinematography & sound design. It’s definitely settling into my horror favs, despite myself not having any particular vested interest in Markiplier.
